Creating a New Era of Space Infrastructure with Robotic Welding Systems

Space Quarters is a startup from Tohoku University that is developing a construction system for building large structures in space. Large structures that will serve as infrastructure in orbit and on the surface of the Moon need to be constructed, but the conventional process of transporting completed structures from the ground poses challenges in terms of the size of the rocket load and the risk of damage due to vibration and acceleration during launch, which limits the size and shape of space structures. To address these issues, they aim to build low-cost, high-value-added space infrastructure by launching construction materials into orbit or to the Moon and assembling them using our proprietary robotic welding system.

KII’s Perspective

Space Quarters technology has the potential to transform the traditional process of launching finished structures into a process of launching building materials and assembling them in space, enabling the construction of large structures with low cost and high added value.
